How we're working greener
On 1st January 2007, Norwich and Peterborough Building Society became one of the first building societies to be 'carbon neutral' and achieve the CarbonNeutral® quality mark. We're working with The CarbonNeutral® Company to reduce and offset emissions, initially over the next three years.
We'll make our biggest savings, and offset most, in these areas:
- Annual business mileage - 1.32 million miles
- Electricity consumption - 3.2 million kwh
- Gas consumption - 0.77 kwh
- Waste - 180 tonnes per annum from N&P's offices and branch network disposed of securely.
We'll offset unavoidable emissions with UK forestry and climate-friendly technology in other countries, so that, for every tonne of CO² the Society produces, 1 tonne will be saved.
Jonathan Shopley, Founder of The CarbonNeutral® Company, said: "We are delighted that N&P is going carbon neutral. The Society has offered green mortgages since 1998 and has worked hard to get its carbon emissions down. It is now extending its positive action at the corporate level and involving its customers. That's a great move".
